When 13 year old CJ's 12 year old sister, Hope, was treated for mucoepidermal carcinoma and received resection treatment, his parents would never have thought he'd be diagnosed with Pre B Cell ALL in January 2020. CJ and his sister Hope live with their parents and 2 teenage sisters.
CJ's mom is a stay at home mother and his dad is a truck driver who has taken some intermittent unpaid FMLA leave for his son's treatments. The entire family experiences worry and stress, and his dad has been concerned about the impact that taking time off work is having on their income and ability to pay bills. Upon connecting with the family, Hands for Holly issued funds to immediately assist with their mortgage, allowing the family room to breath and focus on CJ's care.
COVID-19 UPDATE FROM CJ'S FAMILY
"In this current COVID-19 crisis, we are continuing to do things that we were doing since CJ was diagnosed with leukemia and began chemotherapy. But, some changes that we have had to make are my husband has to take extra steps of cleaning and getting out of uniform when he comes home from work each morning. My children (college and middle school) are doing e-learning from home, and now only one caregiver is allowed to go with CJ to treatment. Another obstacle we've encountered is the school district changed CJ's Homebound instruction due to the virus, leaving us to seek accommodations and additional instructional support for him."
During April & May, Pay It Forward Hands for Holly Challenge is asking individuals, families, and businesses to join the challenge and support local families fighting cancer who are in critical need from COVID-19.
The fear we now face from COVID and the uncertainty ahead can be overwhelming; much like what our families live with every day from cancer. Coronavirus is scary for everyone, but even more so for cancer patients with compromised immune systems. In addition, cancer families already face serious financial barriers, but they are now compounded by COVID. Our families are in greater need now than ever before.
